As SEO Lead, you will be the face of all things SEO relating to on your assigned brand/s. To lead relationships across our business, you will context switching between data analysis, optimisation, technical projects and providing guidance. Engaging with our extensive toolkit and 3rd party partners you will ensure we understand SEO market dynamics, their impact on performance and proactively build plans to maximise on our opportunities and protect our rankings from risk.
In this role you will be the owner of our SEO narrative across your assigned brand/s and be a key part of driving changes in our thinking, performance, and digital behaviours. This role is for an SEO generalist who can confidently draw on a breadth of SEO skills to manage conflicting priorities and a large number of stakeholders.
What you need to do:
- Own the performance narrative of SEO across the business and be the go-to contact in your assigned brand/s. This includes helping the business to understand Search Engine and customer trends, as well as clarifying the support required to achieve our goals.
- Develop and deliver a robust plan for SEO in your brands. This will align with the overall SEO strategy, and complement initiatives driven by the Technical and Optimisation elements of our team. You will need to confidently communicate this broader SEO strategy to stakeholders.
- Use multiple 1st and 3rd party data sets to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities for our businesses. Updating plans and communicating as required.

- You will be accountable for achieving SEO targets, responding to self-identified trends and challenges, re-prioritising plans to maximise performance.
- Continually monitor the SEO landscape using a variety of SEO tools to understand risks and opportunities, both for our domains and the market at large. You will generously share this knowledge, using it to educate the business and drive the best business outcomes.
- Develop and deliver a continuous test and learn plan to ensure our best practices remain current, analysing and understanding the impact of these tests utilising our extensive toolset.
- Be responsible for delivering consistent and thorough communication of key performance metrics and progress of initiatives to our internal stakeholders. You will proactively update priorities and plans as a result of this analysis.
- Proactively collaborate with Digital colleagues to provide feedback, guidance and insight on key calendar events, Digital Content and any executions important to SEO performance.
- Work closely and build relationships with third party agencies to ensure our search strategy is achieved, working together to ensure that the tools and technology used to measure and monitor performance are used to best effect.
- Work closely with the broader Sainsbury’s SEO team to share and evolve best practice. This will be informed by your observations, tests and market research.
- Actively share knowledge with the wider Digital community including general advice, SEO best practices and support the on-going SEO empowerment of Digital colleagues to achieve better digital execution.
- Stay connected to the SEO industry for developments and changes to the strategics, tactics, technology, and solutions available in the market.
- Champion and increase the awareness of our SEO channel and activities across wider stakeholder groups.
What you need to know and show:
- You will have solid SEO knowledge and experience of the natural search market, its trends and direction.
- Be able to confidently analyse data, working across multiple data sets and make priority decisions as a result of this analysis.
- While not expected to be a technical expert you will be able to audit domains, review crawl and log data.
- While not expected to be a content expert, you will be able to brief, review and write to a good standard.
- Clearly and succinctly communicate SEO performance to a variety of stakeholders.
- You will support the SEO team, and the key stakeholders you work closely with, to continue to drive a ‘digital mindset’ shift across the organisation.
- You will build strong relationships with strategic partners and 3rd parties, engaging directly with senior colleagues within these organisations. You will use your awareness of our wider digital agenda and priorities to communicate effectively and enable them to best support us.
- You have excellent attention to detail and are passionate about customer experience.
- Relevant experience within similar role with previous experience and understanding of natural search.
- You have excellent planning and organisation skills, with fierce prioritisation skills.
- Excellent communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. You have the ability to collaborate well across teams and with individuals in order to achieve high quality output.
- You have a confident level of creativity, initiative and influencing skills to support abstract problem solving.
- Previous experience of third-party insight tools e.g Conductor, SEMrush and Similarweb (or equivalent)
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge on SEO marketplace and available insight.
- Thorough understanding of Google/Bing Search Console, knowledge of Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics and other major third-party analytics platforms.
What decisions I can make including budget:
- Accountability for delivering the SEO strategy across assigned Brand/s.
- You need to be aware of financial impacts of decisions & to ensure risks & opportunities are mitigated / flagged to budget holder (SEO Manager)
- The role plays a key part in improving digital outcomes.
Directly or indirectly manages:
- Indirectly manage a number of SEO executives, copywriters and administrators based in the UK and India.
- Agency Partners and 3rd Party Vendors.
- You will play a visible and active leadership role across the wider SEO and CGC team.
